Panel: Art. Democracy. Public space.

With Amelie Deuflhard, Stefan Hilterhaus, Katharina Meyer, Florian Schmidt, Akira Takayama
Moderated by Christian Römer

Part of "Claiming Common Spaces"

Public infrastructures as democratic spaces are a promise that is increasingly being curtailed and restricted. “Creative free spaces” are becoming attractive speculative objects and the promises of the sharing economy have often turned out to be unregulated spaces of exploitation. Is the re-municipalisation of cultural places the order of the day or are private business spaces of all places the new “shared spaces” in which people come together and learn together? This vision is already a reality in Akira Takayama’s work “McDonalds University”.

Which artistic programmes really fulfil the cultural-political commitment to openness and participation? How do public cultural infrastructures also become attractive for communities outside artistic echo spaces? How do we create a true “sharing culture in public space”?
