Songhoy Blues

Part of “Timbuktu Is Back!”

Songhoy Blues was founded in Banako, the capital of Mali, after the members were forced to flee their homes in Timbuktu in the north of the country due to the jihadist occupation, which forbade any kind of music. Guitarist and founder Garba Tourès was motivated by the desire to recreate the lost ambience of the north, and to make the refugees relive their songs. The quartet is named after the Songhoy people, who held a large kingdom in West Africa from the 15th to the 1th centuries. The members come from this ethnic group, and play desert blues with electro, hip hop, and R&B sounds.
