Drugovi, ja se ni sada ne stidim svoje komunističke prošlosti / Comrades, I Am Not Ashamed of My Communist Past

Part of "Comrades, I Am Not Ashamed of My Communist Past"*

In “Comrades, I Am Not Ashamed of My Communist Past” acclaimed theatre director Sanja Mitrović and renowned Serbian actor Vladimir Aleksić address the recent history of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, a country which now exists only in imagination and memory. Their investigation takes place through a dialogue between film and theatre, intertwining the course of performers’ lives with the history of the Yugoslav cinema, the country’s socialist past, the antifascist struggle, the sense of community, the neoliberal revisionism, the nationalist wars, and the gradual decline of their hometown. In today’s society, is it possible to remain loyal to ideals on which the previous generations were raised? With “Comrades, I Am Not Ashamed of My Communist Past”, Sanja Mitrović’s first work presented at HAU Hebbel am Ufer, the director continues her exploration of theatre’s relation to the social, political and cultural realities of our time. The performance brings face-to-face the embodied personal memories of performers and images of a national cinema to ask what remains from the shared values of solidarity and social justice in times of materialistic individuality.
