Revolutions begin in Detroit. Over a hundred years ago the first model T rolled off Ford’s assembly line in Highland Park, changing forever the way that automobiles are manufactured. Ford’s main innovation, the assembly line, was ultimately introduced in the United States and in Europe and resulted in an acceleration in car manufacturing, in the worldwide adoption of the division of labour, and in Detroit becoming the capital of the automobile industry.

In 1985 another revolution took place in Detroit, this time a musical one. Juan Atkins published the first record on his newly founded label Metroplex using the moniker MODEL 500. Today the piece, “No UFO’s”, marks the year zero of the techno movement. Like Ford’s Model T, the influence of the new machine rhythms was global, but in particular in Europe, a Europe in which techno developed, starting from Berlin, into a large cultural phenomenon.

The lustre of the once world capital of cars has faded, but Detroit techno continued to develop and has continued to influence generations of techno musicians. Juan Atkins’s music is marked by his ability to get machines to talk, to give them a soul – his production style has inspired a legion of admirers and can still be heard on dance floors all over the world. In 2007 Atkins founded a Model 500 band. This time Atkin’s added Detroit DJ and producer DJ Skurge, along with his long-time colleague and established funk and techno producer Mark Taylor. They began appearing as a band as the “new” MODEL 500. After a long absence Juan Atkins, Mark Taylor, Milton Baldwin aka Dj Skurge and Gerald Brunson will once again be on stage together as MODEL 500 at HAU Hebbel am Ufer.
