Part of the festival The Aesthetics of Resistance – Peter Weiss 100

Peter Weiss’s film work marks the transition from a surrealist interior view to an examination of social reality. However, Weiss’s documentary method maintains his individual perspective as well as his contradictions. Against this backdrop, the international film selection is dedicated to the relationship between aesthetic and political subjectivity with regard to resistance and social change.

The film is about listening to the men and women who took part in the last attempt at an armed socialist revolution in Germany. The three-part “newsreel”, produced in 1971 at the dffb, shows the class war as ordinary experience.

This experimental fiction film combines both of the key elements in Peter Weiss’s film work: the subjective-surreal approach and the documentary one. Using Stockholm as its example, the film shows a young man’s encounter with the big city.

About the careers, quirks and crimes of the German business elite from the 20th century in relation to the Greece crisis–in their artistically sober way, both films present a striking image of finance capitalism and the unequal distribution of wealth and participation.

The film tells the story of a bourgeois aspiring writer in revolutionary Havana in 1961. He observes the changes, trying to remember the old days and to understand the new ones. A profound reflection on the Cuban Revolution.

Afsan's Long Day (The Young Man Was, Part 2), Naeem Mohaiemen, BD 2014, 40 min. English
Both films deal with the question of violence and resistance in the history of the radical left. Peter Davis documents the congress on the Dialectics of Liberation, which took place in London in July 1967, while Naeem Mohaiemen compares the political tumult in Bangladesh during the 1970s to the German Autumn.

"The Ugly One" is based on a script by the Japanese filmmaker Masao Adachi, who lived underground in Beirut for over two decades. Using the story of Lili (Juliette Navis) and Michel (Rabih Mroué) Baudelaire examines terrorism, remorse and the irresolvable political situation in the Middle East.

Factory Complex, IM Heung-soon, KR 2014, 95 min. Korean with engl. ST
"Factory Complex" shows the exploitation of unskilled women workers in South Korea’s textile and electronics industries during the 1970s. Alternating between documentary and art, the film won the Silver Lion at the 2015 Venice Biennale.
