Martin Lorenz

Martin Lorenz, born in Zurich, percussion studies at the Zurich Conservatory, at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and at the Conservatoire National der Région Rueil-Malmaison Paris with Horst Hofmann, Jan Pustjens, Marinus Komst, Peter Prommel, Gaston Sylvestre and François Bedel. His interest in music theatre led him to do master classes with Jean-Pierre Drouet and Georges Aperghis. Since 1999 Martin Lorenz has been working as a freelance percussionist in the area of contemporary and experimental music, realising solo and chamber music projects with various partners: with Conrad Steinmann, with Teodora Stepancic, the “ensemble für neue musik zürich” and others. These partnerships have resulted in collaborations with composers such as Edu Haubensak, Luc Döbereiner, Daniel Mouthon, Virgil Moorefield, and Alfred Zimmerlin, whose works he has premiered. Martin Lorenz began to supplement his arsenal of percussion instruments with electronic instruments, thus extending the spectrum of his expressive forms with installation works and music on the edges of club culture. In addition, a series of electronic works were created for his performances as DJ, which he has released in limited editions on hand-made records. For his work as a composer, Martin Lorenz was awarded a grant from the Aargauer Kuratorium in 2010. Martin Lorenz is a member of the Collegium Novum Zürich and Trio Nexus, Berlin. Concerts in Switzerland, Germany, England, Italy, China, Japan and Egypt as well as at the Lucerne Festival and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.
