Reflecting on "Wanna Play?"
German and English with simultaneous translation
The early cancellation of the performance “Wanna Play? – Love in the Age of Grindr” by the Dutch artist Dries Verhoeven has raised many questions. Following the public discussion on October 5, HAU Hebbel am Ufer is hosting a further talk on October 15. Short statements will be given by sex researcher Martin Dannecker, internet activist Nathan Fain and journalist and blogger Kevin Junk. The discussion will then be opened up to questions from the audience, at which time Dries Verhoeven and Annemie Vanackere, artistic and managing director of HAU Hebbel am Ufer, will also participate. Moderation will be provided by journalist Martin Reichert. The event begins at 8 pm at HAU1.
The Dutch artist Dries Verhoeven is developing the new project “Wanna Play?” with HAU Hebbel am Ufer, a performative installation that thematises the opportunities and tragedy of the phenomenon of smartphone apps for sex dates. One movement of the finger is all that is needed – and up to 200 men from the immediate area appear on the display. After the gay movement's successful struggles in the '70s and '80s,  this seems to have created a new “closet.” The way that men meet once again becomes invisible to the inhabitants of the city. Dries Verhoeven will live for two weeks in a glass truck trailer, meeting up with people from the area who he invites via smartphone to come to him. The so-called “closed closet” goes public.
